CAROLYN FOK AKA CYRNAI

Carolyn Fok and Steve Bryson revel in their mutual passion of space and sound. Both come from decades of exploration of new sounds, encompassing electronic, traditional, and ambient compositions. Their combined experience blossoms into eloquent deep dives into ambient inner and outer space.

Carolyn Fok and Steve Bryson were introduced by their mutual friend, the ambient pioneer Robert Rich, at a concert. Together, they create “space music.” At first, talk of Space was their center of gravity, as Carolyn’s intense inquiry began to spark because
Steve is an astronomer who studies planets and stars.

Inevitably, Steve and Carolyn listened to each other’s music, a wide range encompassing electronic, traditional, and ambient compositions. Somewhere between these worlds, an electronic sonic space ride was inevitable. Carolyn’s adventurous investigative, empathic process landed her at Steve’s studio in the San Francisco Bay Area with musical possibilities.

There, numerous improvised sessions were recorded using Steve’s gear including a large modular synthesizer, and Carolyn’s portable instruments. Each brought their decades of expertise to the table, and right away eloquent deep dives into ambient inner and outer space came into existence, an automatic collaborative fruition from the first take. With adventure as the name of the game, anything goes is their real deal.

More about Carolyn:
Carolyn Fok’s works have spanned nearly four decades since 1976, the majority of her body of work is previously unpublished. You can access approximately 100 albums of her unreleased work by going here: https://www.memoirofsound.com.

Carolyn is perhaps best known for pioneering a form of experimental music intertwining her sound designs, real life, and popular rhythm constructs.  She composes, produces, engineers, remixes and masters all her designs with synthesizers and percussion, and uses a variety of instruments and sounds ranging from piano, guitar, to gongs and more as tools to an art canvas.

Carolyn’s music and sound began with recording stories on a tape recorder at age 9.  Intrigued with a 70s drum machine her father built from from scratch, and his multi-track recorder, which sparked a lifelong fascination with sound design, she developed a self-taught songwriting approach.

In early 1982, Carolyn created the stage name CYRNAI, and released “Charred Blossoms” vinyl / EP, in 1986.  As well, in 1984, Carolyn won a scholarship to The Academy of Art College San Francisco and moved into a family property which provided an excess of space to develop art and music.

More About Steve:

Steve grew up in Chicago and moved to California to attend graduate school at Berkeley in 1981. Steve works for NASA and enjoys discovering planets and stars, as well as creating space music, which he’s been composing since the late 1980s.
